What are the reactions in the Balkans to the arrest of Maduro?
Today the US attacked Venezuela, arrested Nicolas Maduro and shook the international scene. Reactions seem to have been divided into blocs, with some supporting the attack and others demanding respect for international rules.
There were also reactions in the Balkans. Kurti and Osmani from Kosovo have expressed clear support for the US action, seeing it as a blow to the dictatorship and an attempt to end repression in Venezuela. Sali Berisha has also openly sided with Trump, calling the action a “strong signal” to opponents of democracy around the world.
But Prime Minister Edi Rama has so far not made any personal statement on the attack in Venezuela. It seems he was content with a statement from Foreign Minister Elisa Spiropali, who supports the operation.
Aleksandar Vučić also reacted, a reaction that has raised doubts in the Serbian media, as he did not welcome the operation. " I hope that the situation in South America will calm down and that the attacks on Venezuela will stop ," he declared.
In Tirana and Belgrade, social commentary and public reactions are scattered, but one trend is clear: many users are humorously or seriously demanding that Trump come to Albania “to save us from Rama.” The same is true in Serbian media. This emotional reflection shows the public’s fatigue with domestic politics, but the reality is different.
The US has no intention or capacity to attack or intervene militarily in Albania, on the contrary, Albania is considered a strong ally of America. Today's action against Venezuela is a clear message to other autocrats: leaders who suppress democracy and stand far from Western values are the subject of international attention and strong criticism from Washington.
While the US has not welcomed the elections in Tirana due to concerns about the way they were conducted, and the situation in Serbia remains tense due to control of the media and institutions, the reactions of autocrats in the region are an indicator of their political stances.
