The US president said the US was responding to the downing of an Apache helicopter, while just hours earlier he had downplayed the incident.
United States President Donald Trump declared that the American response to Iran for shooting down an Apache military helicopter is "very strong and very powerful."
" I think it's very important to respond. They shot down a helicopter and we're responding right now ," Trump told ABC News' Jonathan Karl as US Central Command (CENTCOM) officially announced the launch of strikes against Iranian targets.
" This is a response to what they did. They did it with our helicopter last night and I believe the response should be very strong, very powerful and that is exactly what it is ," he added.
Trump's comments come just hours after the US president downplayed the incident. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal on Tuesday, he said the helicopter crash was "no big deal."
Earlier, in a post on Truth Social, Trump confirmed that the two Apache pilots had escaped without injury.
"However, the United States must necessarily respond to this attack," he wrote.
The US president's statements come at a time when tensions between Washington and Tehran have escalated significantly, following US attacks on Iranian targets and Iran's announcement of launching missiles and drones towards US targets in the region.
