Ghana will begin their World Cup campaign tomorrow against Panama in Toronto, but without one of the team's most important players, Thomas Partey. The Ghanaian midfielder did not travel with the team to Canada and remained at the national team's training camp in Rhode Island, in the United States.
According to reports, Parti's absence is not related to physical problems. The footballer is in good condition and was considered one of the sure starters for Ghana's first match. The reason for his absence is the refusal of his entry visa by Canadian authorities.
The decision comes as Partey faces a trial in London. He is accused of seven counts of rape and one count of sexual assault, allegations made by four different women. The footballer has denied all charges and has pleaded not guilty.
Although he was allowed to enter and stay in the United States as part of the World Cup delegation, Canadian authorities have decided not to grant him entry into their territory for the match held in Toronto.
The investigations against the Party began after the first complaints filed in July 2025, related to events that allegedly occurred during 2021 and 2022. Then, in February 2026, two more complaints were added for alleged episodes in 2020. All cases were merged into a single judicial procedure, which led to the postponement of the process to 2027.
Despite the legal situation, Parti has continued his sporting activity, playing in La Liga and with the Ghana national team. Coach Carlos Queiroz had included him in the list of players for the World Cup, but the refusal of a visa from Canada prevents him from being present in the opening match.
However, the midfielder could return to the team's availability for the remaining group stage matches against Croatia and England, which are scheduled to take place in the United States.
