The 23rd civic protest seems to have touched a sensitive point in the government camp. After the presentation of the protesters' demands, which include the resignation of the government, the creation of a caretaker government, and the limitation of the prime minister's term to no more than two terms in a lifetime, the Socialist Party's first reaction was not to their content.
Dritan Goxhaj, a former soldier and former KLA fighter, who read the statement with the protesters' demands in front of the Prime Minister's Office, ended up being targeted.
The leader of the Socialist parliamentary group, Taulant Balla, harshly attacked Goxhaj in a reaction on social media.
" Today the scenario was completely revealed! The statement with demands on behalf of the protesters was made by the 'spokesperson' of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Albania. The person is called Dritan Goxhaj, who in the media and social networks has long come out in defense of the Iranian terrorist regime, attacking the USA, Israel but also Albania. It is unimaginable how a former KLA participant today advocates for the Iranian terrorist regime against our ally the USA, without whom Kosovo would never have been liberated ," Balla wrote.
He then continued with another attack on protest participants.
" Now the 'patriots' and the blacks will enjoy the seal of shame! Slowly, slowly, everything is coming out! And the flamingos will be surprised at themselves for falling headlong among the ravens and crows of false Albanianism ," he added.
What is striking is that the Socialists' response does not address any of the protesters' demands. There is no comment on the caretaker government, the referendum, the constitutional changes, or the limitation of mandates, a proposal that would automatically put not only Edi Rama, but also Sali Berisha out of the running.
Instead of debating the demands that have been articulated for 23 days on the streets of Tirana, the Socialist Party has chosen to attack the man who read them. And the irony is that the target of the attack is not a party leader or an opposition figure, but a former KLA fighter, a category that Albanian politics has used for years as a symbol of patriotism and national sacrifice.
