As its path towards the European Union continues, Albania is strengthening its strategic alliances with the US, NATO and Turkey. But its European credibility will increasingly be measured by the transparency, legality and sustainability of major development projects.
To truly understand Albania's position in the new European scenario, it is necessary to go beyond a simplistic reading, based solely on membership in the European Union. Tirana is no longer simply a candidate country awaiting Brussels' decision.
It has become a regional actor that uses its geographical and political position to simultaneously strengthen several strategic ties. On the one hand, the European journey continues to mark significant progress.
On the other hand, the Albanian government is intensifying relations with the United States, NATO, Turkey, and international investors, building a political, economic, and military security net that reduces the risk of exclusive dependence on the deadlines for European enlargement.
Therefore, the evolution of the Albanian dossier represents a touchstone not only for Tirana, but also for the geopolitical credibility of the European Union. On a formal level, the path towards membership is moving forward.
Over the past few years, Albania has accelerated its alignment with EU standards, gradually opening negotiation chapters and moving forward on the most sensitive files related to the rule of law, public administration and the fight against corruption.
These are important results that confirm that the European perspective remains the main institutional reference of the country. However, in the Western Balkans there remains a widespread perception: entry into the Union does not depend exclusively on the merits of the candidates. National vetoes, internal political balances of the EU and new strategic priorities can slow down processes that technically seem mature.
It is precisely this uncertainty that is pushing Tirana to diversify its international relations. The economic reality continues to be deeply European. The community market absorbs the vast majority of Albanian exports and represents the country's main trading partner.
Italy remains an essential partner, both as an investor and as a natural destination for Albanian products. This fact makes any hypothesis of an economic departure from Europe less credible.
The situation is different in the security plan. Here the role of the United States seems decisive. Albania considers Washington as the main guarantor of regional stability and security in the Balkans.
NATO membership, reinforced in recent years by increasingly intensive military cooperation, has consolidated Tirana's position as a reliable partner of the Atlantic Alliance in the Adriatic region.
The modernization of military infrastructure and the increasing use of Albanian territory within NATO's strategic positioning indicate a profound transformation. Thus, Albania is no longer simply a security beneficiary, but an active contributor to Euro-Atlantic security.
In this context, the role of Turkey should also be seen, as it continues to exert significant influence through investments, military cooperation, cultural relations, and soft power initiatives.
Ankara does not represent an alternative to Europe, but an additional element of an increasingly pragmatic foreign strategy. The key point is related to the compatibility between this multilateral openness and the standards required by the European Union.
Several large tourism and real estate development projects along the Adriatic coast have sparked debate over environmental protection, administrative transparency, and compliance with rules.
This is where an important part of the country's European credibility will be played.
Albania can transform international investment into a lever of modernization, but only if it manages to prove that economic growth, legality, and sustainability are not incompatible objectives.
Otherwise, the risk would not be a break with Brussels, but a progressive divergence between commitments made in negotiations and real governance practices.
Therefore, the real question is not whether Tirana is choosing between Europe and the United States. The answer is clearly negative. Albania remains resolutely Western, European, and Atlantic.
The issue is more about the European Union's ability to remain the central point of reference in a region where geopolitical competition has returned with force. If Brussels can offer a credible and predictable membership path, Albanian integration will represent a success for the entire European project.
If, on the contrary, delays and uncertainties prevail, Tirana will continue to seek elsewhere those political and strategic guarantees that every state, especially in a fragile area like the Balkans, considers essential for its future./ Pamphlet from “Opinione.it
