Despite the tense political situation the country is experiencing, the Iranian national team put in a decent performance in its first match at the 2026 World Cup, drawing 2-2 against New Zealand.
The performance of both teams received praise from FIFA president Gianni Infantino, who, through a video published on social media, congratulated the players for the level shown on the field.
" Once again, a packed stadium in Los Angeles, with about 70,000 spectators. It was a beautiful and exciting match. The match between Iran and New Zealand ended 2-2, with great moments and goals. I was very, very happy to see the Iranian team playing in the 2026 World Cup ," Infantino declared.
In the same video, the head of FIFA also appears in the Iranian national team's locker room, where he addresses the players with words of praise for their performance.
" Congratulations to everyone. I'm very happy to see you here and to have played ," Infantino told the Iranian players.
Meanwhile, due to tensions in relations with the United States, the Iranian national team has temporarily settled in Tijuana, Mexico. The team is staying there as a result of restrictions imposed by American authorities.
