Norway will enter the 2026 World Cup with high ambitions and the belief that it can be one of the surprises of the tournament. The Scandinavian team relies not only on the talent of the current generation of players, but also on the experience of coach Stale Solbaken, the architect of the team's historic return to the biggest stage of world football.
Solbaken managed to guide Norway to a qualification that had been lacking for 28 years, leaving behind strong rivals during the qualifiers. Now, in a difficult World Cup group, the Norwegians hope to go beyond the group stage and continue their journey in the competition.
However, the 58-year-old coach's personal story is as remarkable as his success on the bench. Solbaken's career as a footballer took a dramatic turn in 2001, when during a training session with the Norwegian national team he suffered a heart attack caused by a heart problem.
The current Norway coach collapsed on the pitch and for about seven minutes his heart stopped beating. Thanks to the immediate intervention of the national team doctor, Frank Odgard, and the medical staff, Solbaken was resuscitated and managed to survive.
After this episode, he was forced to end his playing career and devote himself to the coaching profession. His first steps on the bench proved successful, especially at Copenhagen, the club with which he built a reputation in European football and achieved important results on the international stage.
During his time in Denmark, Solbakken also became known for challenging big European teams, earning the respect of many well-known coaches, including Pep Guardiola.
Now, on the eve of the 2026 World Cup, Solbaken aims to crown the work done with a talented generation of Norwegian players. After a life marked by great challenges on and off the pitch, he seeks to write a new chapter in the history of Norwegian football and confirm on the world stage the successes achieved during the qualifiers.
