
Three people, including a police officer, were killed after an armed incident that occurred Monday in the Côte-des-Neiges neighborhood of Montreal, the Montreal Police Service (SPVM) confirmed.
According to authorities, the incident began around 11:35 a.m. near the intersection of De Courtrai and Trans Island streets after police received reports of a gunman. Witnesses reported seeing a gun sticking out of a window of a hotel in the area.
When officers arrived at the scene, they were met with gunfire, leading to an exchange of gunfire. As a result, one police officer was killed in the line of duty, while another was seriously injured. Authorities later announced that the injured officer's condition was stable.
A civilian and the suspect were also killed in the incident. Police said the suspect was killed during the operation.
Montreal Police Chief Fady Dagher called the incident a “nightmare” and expressed his condolences to the family of the slain officer. He stressed that the immediate danger to the public has been eliminated and that the shelter-in-place order was lifted hours after the incident.
During the operation, authorities issued an emergency alert to residents, warning of an “armed and dangerous” person. Residents were asked to stay indoors, keep their doors locked, and avoid the affected area.
The police operation lasted several hours and involved a significant police presence. Footage from the scene showed armed officers searching buildings and businesses in the area.
So far, authorities have not released the identities of the civilian killed and the suspect. The motive for the incident also remains unclear. Investigators are working to clarify the full circumstances of the incident, including the civilian's death.
The Côte-des-Neiges neighborhood is known for its large Jewish community, and the incident occurred near several institutions associated with the community. However, authorities have not said whether there is any connection between the location and the incident.
