Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reiterated that the Israeli army will not end its military presence in southern Lebanon, arguing that this is necessary to guarantee the security of Israeli citizens near the northern border.

In a post on the social network X, Netanyahu said that his instructions to the army, coordinated with Defense Minister Israel Katz, remain unchanged.

"Our fighters in southern Lebanon have complete freedom of action to thwart any direct or new threat to them or to the residents of the north. The IDF has no restrictions in this regard," Netanyahu declared.

He added that Israel will continue to remain in what he described as a "security zone" in southern Lebanon for as long as it is deemed necessary to protect Israeli citizens.

On the other hand, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar stated that Israel has no "territorial ambitions" in Lebanon, despite the continued military presence in the border area.

Meanwhile, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced the lifting of security restrictions in eight Israeli communities near the border with Lebanon. According to a Telegram post, the measures were lifted in the Safsufa, Meron, Or HaGanuz, Bar Yochai, Yesud HaMaala, Kisra-Sumei, Beit Jann and Sde Eliezer areas.

The developments come as the ceasefire in Lebanon is largely being respected. A senior Lebanese security official told Reuters that implementation of the agreement had been "almost complete" as of Saturday evening.

US Vice President JD Vance also commented on the situation, describing the process in Lebanon as "a work in progress" and emphasizing that diplomatic discussions will continue.
