Following the resignation of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, former Manchester mayor Andy Burnham has announced his candidacy to be his successor at the head of the government.

In his response, Burnham thanked Starmer for his work and dedication during this difficult period, adding that his decision to resign paves the way for a smooth transition. He stressed that his goal is to return Britain and the Labour Party to where they belong.

“Keir has given our country a great service and I want to thank him for his leadership and commitment during such a challenging period. His decision marks the start of a transition and it is important that this process is carried out in an orderly and responsible manner. I will stand as part of that process. The country expects stability, seriousness and a continued focus on the issues that matter most and that is what he will get. As we move forward, our priority must be to work together to get this country back to where we all want it to be. People want to see progress in economic growth, the cost of living, public services, housing and opportunities for the next generation. Political change must never distract from the responsibility to improve people’s lives. The Labour movement has always been at its strongest when it looks forward with confidence and purpose. That is what we will do from here and we will ensure that this transition is a positive process of renewal for the party and our country ,” he declared. Burnham.

We recall that the new Prime Minister will be the country's seventh leader in the last 10 years, after David Cameron, Theresa May, Boris Johnson, Liz Truss, Rishi Sunak and Starmer.
