The US administration believes it is closer than ever to reaching an agreement with Iran, although the exact timeline still remains unclear.
In an interview with the CBS Sunday Morning show, US Vice President JD Vance stated that negotiations are moving in the right direction and that an agreement could be reached very soon.
" The deal could happen next week, but it could also happen in a few months ," Vance said in the interview conducted on Tuesday.
However, he expressed confidence that the parties will reach a result before the US midterm elections, which will be held in November.
" Absolutely. I believe we will know much more before the midterm elections ," he replied when asked if a deal would be finalized before that deadline.
Vance's comments come just days after President Donald Trump said a deal to end the conflict could be reached within two weeks. He then narrowed the deadline further, telling reporters that a solution could come "within two or three days."
However, a few hours later, Trump announced that Iran had shot down a US Apache helicopter and warned that the United States would respond to the attack.
Despite recent tensions, Vance appeared optimistic about the possibility of an agreement that would not only reduce current tensions but also guarantee long-term stability.
" At the moment, I believe we are in a position to reach an agreement that is economically good for the United States and that realistically addresses the Iranian nuclear program, not just now and not just during the presidency of Donald Trump, but in the long term ," he declared.
According to the US vice president, this remains the main objective of the Trump administration's policy towards Iran.
" That's our goal and I think we're very close to achieving it. But we still have work to do and we'll continue to do it ," Vance added.
His statements come at a time when Washington is trying to preserve the fragile ceasefire between Iran and Israel, while in parallel diplomatic efforts continue for a broader agreement on the Iranian nuclear program.
