How elites control the fiscal system and the state...
Yanis Varoufakis is a Greek economist, former finance minister, and one of the most vocal critics of the global economic system. He became an international figure during the Greek debt crisis in 2015, when he represented the Greek government in negotiations with the European Union and the IMF.
Known for his insightful analyses of financial capitalism and the crisis of democracy, Varoufakis founded the pan-European movement DiEM25 and is the author of several widely translated books, including “Adults in the Room” and “Technofeudalism: What Killed Capitalism.” His writings are notable for their critique of economic elites and their role in undermining democratic sovereignty.
The US, UK, France and Germany are facing acute fiscal crises, caused by rising spending on pensions, welfare and defence. Politicians dare not cut them or raise taxes. Many argue that democracy is weakening fiscal management because citizens do not accept restrictions. But Varoufakis counters that the problem is not democracy, but the lack of it. He describes the system as an oligarchy that only allows us to vote.
Free and fair elections allow individuals with money and time to take public office, but that doesn't mean they control power. Once elected, they must be approved by the real political and financial "barons," who are not elected but control the system.
Varoufakis gives the example of France: in 1996, the 500 richest families owned 6% of the income. Today they own 42%. The same financial elite has protected its interests by transferring financial risks to the state. Instead of going bankrupt, financial institutions are "bailout" by the state budget, while taxes on wealth do not increase.

Protests like the one in New York against authoritarian leaders and calls for "No kings" are encouraging, but Varoufakis warns that they are insufficient if the power of the barons is not challenged. These are not recognizable figures, but integrated mechanisms that run the economy, the media, the laws and institutions.
He emphasizes that the real struggle is not with charismatic leaders, but with the invisible structures that enable them to exist. As long as democracy remains formal and not substantial, oligarchy will continue to dominate.
In Albania, too, the situation reflects the same pattern. Political and economic elites have built a system where formal power rests in the hands of the elected, but real control of resources, institutions, and justice rests with an informal minority of oligarchs. Clientelistic agreements, multi-year concessions, fiscal favoritism, and media capture prove that Albanian democracy functions as a facade.
Albanian barons do not appear in campaigns, but they influence every strategic decision. They control key markets, finance political campaigns, maintain connections with the judiciary, and provide silent immunity. This structure has produced a new form of hybrid authoritarianism, where the citizen votes but is not represented.
This analysis brings the need to change the approach to reforms: not only a change of figures in power, but the de-oligarchization of the economy and transparency in decision-making. Albania needs not only new leaders, but also the overthrow of structures that produce new barons in every political rotation./ Pamphlet
