American journalist lashes out at Trump: War with Iran was a disaster

The Trump administration's war with Iran will be remembered more for its confusion and cost than for any strategic success, according to US correspondent Mark Stone, who in his analysis describes the conflict as a "catastrophic mess" that damaged the US image and failed to curb Tehran's influence.

In his analysis, Stone writes that the recent developments have been among the most unusual and confusing he has reported on in his years of covering the Trump presidency. He singles out the contradictory statements regarding what the US administration has presented as a deal with Iran.

"Covering the events surrounding Trump, the past day has been one of the wildest," Stone writes, adding that the press conference and official communications created more ambiguity than clarity about the alleged deal.

According to him, administration officials have given different versions about the time and manner of signing the document.

"So, first of all, we have now signed a kind of understanding with Iran," a US official was quoted as saying during a media briefing.

Stone notes that the memorandum of understanding was reportedly initially signed on Sunday, then re-presented in Versailles and is expected to be formally signed in the coming days, a process he finds unusual and confusing.

He also points out that the leaders of the G7 countries have avoided public criticism of the American president, but hints that there is dissatisfaction in diplomatic circles about the way the crisis has been handled.

"There has been a dizzying level of unilateral diplomacy. It has been truly astonishing," Stone writes, adding that many of the US's allies see the situation as a "catastrophic mess."

Focusing on the consequences of the conflict, the journalist mentions civilian casualties and raises questions about the human cost of the war.

"So many schoolchildren died in Minab. For what?" he writes, criticizing the lack of political responsibility for the tragic events that accompanied the conflict.

At the end of his analysis, Stone concludes that the war against Iran did not bring the promised results.

"This war against Iran has been a tragic and costly waste of time that neither limits Iran's malign influence nor makes America great again," the journalist concludes.
