Following Keir Starmer's resignation as head of the British government, Italian media outlet TG La7 turns its attention to two other leaders of the European left: Pedro Sanchez and Edi Rama. According to the analysis, the Spanish and Albanian prime ministers are facing an increasingly difficult political climate, amid scandals, protests and growing discontent. While Starmer was forced to step down under pressure from his own party, the article raises the question of whether Sanchez and Rama could face a similar political fate.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez is among the European leaders who have expressed their support for Keir Starmer.
Many things unite them. Both are left-wing and both are not particularly popular in their countries.
Scandals and corruption in the Socialist Party
Sanchez is being dogged by corruption scandals that are rocking his Socialist Party, as well as his wife Begoña, who has been sent to trial and had her passport seized.
The Supreme Court sentenced former Transport Minister José Luis Abalos, once Sanchez's right-hand man, to 24 years and three months in prison. The charges relate to bribes in the purchase of masks during the 2020 pandemic.
The magistrates also sentenced former ministerial advisor Koldo Garcia to 19 years and eight months in prison. Four and a half years in prison were given to Victor De Aldama, who pleaded guilty. The criminal offenses recognized by the court are serious: criminal organization, corruption, embezzlement of funds and influence peddling.
Not only that. In justifying the decision, the judges speak of the destabilizing potential of corruption, which shakes the democratic architecture of the state and compromises the legitimacy of institutions.
The Sanchez government immediately distanced itself: " We condemn and oppose all behaviors that contradict transparency, merit and integrity ," the Moncloa statement said.
For now, all the parties in the governing coalition, a complex architecture that is considered Sanchez's political masterpiece, have not withdrawn their support, but are asking the Socialists to clean up their ranks.
Meanwhile, polls are favoring the People's Party.
The situation in Albania
But Sanchez is not the only one in deep trouble. In Albania, tens of thousands of people have been taking to the streets for weeks. This is the so-called Flamingo Revolution, which demands the resignation of Edi Rama, the prime minister for many years, who has been engaged in negotiations for Albania's membership in the European Union for months.
But Rama is not the only target. The entire country's system, which continues to sell Albania's best assets to foreign billionaires, has come under attack.
The latest spark is the luxury resort and other projects that Ivanka Trump and her husband Jared Kushner, between one international mediation and another, have decided to build near the Vjosa-Narta lagoon, an ecological oasis and flamingo sanctuary, as well as on the island of Sazan near Vlora, another natural paradise that would be taken away from ordinary people, already tired of corrupt oligarchs.
However, Rama has no intention of backing down. “ Investments are vital if Albania wants to become the most attractive luxury destination in the Mediterranean ,” insists the prime minister, who has no intention of opening a dialogue./ Adapted from " Pamphlet" by "TG La7"
