US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the United States will engage directly with the Lebanese government, clarifying that this process is separate from negotiations related to relations between Lebanon and Israel.
Speaking to reporters upon arrival in Abu Dhabi, Rubio stressed that "Lebanon is a sovereign state" and added that "the United States will cooperate directly with Lebanese authorities on bilateral and regional security issues."
The top American diplomat also confirmed that he has held talks with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, while making it clear that topics related to Iran's influence and support for Hezbollah will be addressed in contacts with Tehran.
Rubio is on a diplomatic tour of the Middle East, which includes the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Bahrain. During the visits, the latest security developments in the region following the agreements between the US and Iran are expected to be discussed.
Commenting on the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, he reiterated the American position that "Iran cannot impose tariffs on the Strait of Hormuz," emphasizing that it is an international waterway where the norms of international law apply.
Rubio also underlined that a lasting peace in the region requires a halt to missile and drone attacks, considering this an important condition for reducing tensions.
