Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni stated that she is shocked by the latest episode involving US President Donald Trump, but stressed that she does not want the controversy to continue and that bilateral cooperation between Italy and the United States must return to normal.
Speaking at the "Dita e La Verità" event in an interview with the newspaper's director, Maurizio Belpietro, Meloni said he sees no risk of negative consequences in relations between the two countries.
"These are two countries with a long and stable history of cooperation. A clash on social media cannot overturn or redefine this relationship," she said.
Meloni added that she has read comments suggesting that her stance was particularly harsh or that it was intended to divert attention from the war in Iran, but stressed that she does not want to further fuel this debate.
"I cannot say whether these allegations are true, but I do not intend to continue this discussion. Our cooperation with the US must return to normal," the Italian prime minister declared.
She also supported the decision of Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani to temporarily cancel his planned visit to the US, calling it a way to send a clear message.
"Tajani acted correctly when he canceled the mission at that moment. But once the message has been understood, there is no reason to go any further," Meloni said.
The Prime Minister confirmed that the Italian government will participate in the July 2 meeting at Villa Taverna and underlined that Italy's foreign policy will not change.
"I don't change my mind. Our foreign policy will remain the same as it has been for the last 80 years. It is important to maintain a stable relationship between the US and Europe," she stressed.
Meloni also referred to the recent visit of the Italian Minister of Defense to Washington, as well as the increase in Italian exports to the American market despite the tariffs imposed by the US. According to her, this shows that Italian products continue to enjoy high demand in the United States.
