FIFA has announced a significant change to the penalty shootout protocol, which is expected to be implemented ahead of the round of 16 matches at the World Cup.
Under the new proposal, the procedure would be simplified by holding a single coin toss. The team that wins the toss would have the right to choose between two options: to take the first penalty or to determine the goal where the kicks will be taken.
Meanwhile, the team that loses the draw will automatically receive the remaining option, without the need for a second selection procedure.
According to FIFA, this change aims to make the penalty shootout process simpler, faster and more efficient, reducing preliminary procedures at one of the most crucial and high-pressure moments of a match.
The new regulation is expected to be applied in the knockout stages, where penalty shootouts often play a decisive role in determining which teams advance to the tournament finals.
