An 80-year-old man in Salento, Italy, has been sentenced to 3 years and 3 months in prison after being found guilty of domestic violence and assault against his Albanian wife and her two children.
In addition to the prison sentence, the court ruled that the defendant must be banned from holding public office for five years. The defendant will also have to pay preliminary compensation of 25,000 euros to his wife and minor son, and 10,000 euros to his adult daughter. The final amount of compensation will be determined at a later stage.
According to the investigation, the incident began after the elderly man brought the much younger Albanian woman to Italy, along with her two children from a previous relationship, promising her a better life and a new family. However, according to the indictment, the promises quickly turned into a long period of violence and abuse.
The prosecution alleges that from 2017 to May 2021, the 80-year-old man exercised continuous physical and psychological violence against his family. He controlled the movements of his wife and her two children, did not allow them to leave the house, attend school regularly or have free time. According to the investigative file, he forced them to wake up in the early hours of the morning to clean the apartments they rented.
According to the prosecution, the violence was also accompanied by constant insults and threats. He would tell the victims: "Either you leave, or I'll kill you," "You are dogs, you are parasites that I keep in the house and feed you," and "I put everything here and you are the dogs I feed."
One of the most serious episodes occurred in October 2017, when the boy, then 6 years old, was hit with force and crashed into a radiator. As a result, he suffered a head injury with significant blood loss and was rushed to the Tricase hospital.
According to the accusation, in the following years the old man also abused the girl, slapping her on several occasions. In another episode, he followed her to the beach, insulting her and threatening to throw stones at her.
When his wife asked for a divorce, he allegedly tried to strangle her by putting his hands around her throat and telling her he would kill her. On another occasion, he also threatened his minor son with the words: "When mom comes home, tell her to take them both and get out of here, otherwise I will kill all three of you."
The investigation began after the woman and her daughter repeatedly appeared at the emergency room of Tricase Hospital, where doctors found injuries suspected to be the result of domestic violence.
