Portugal recorded a convincing 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan in the second round of Group K, taking an important step towards the 1/32 stage of the World Cup.
The spotlight was on Cristiano Ronaldo, who not only helped his team triumph with two goals, but also set a historical record. The Portuguese striker became the first player to score in six consecutive World Cups.
Portugal started the match in the best possible way. In the 6th minute, after a quick move and a precise assist from Joao Cancelos, Ronaldo found himself in front of the opposing goalkeeper and sent the ball into the net for the score 1-0.
Just 11 minutes later, the Portuguese doubled their lead. Nuno Mendes scored his first goal at a World Cup, curling a free kick from a central position to make it 2-0.
Uzbekistan thought they had restored hope in the 29th minute when Azizjon Ganiev scored with a spectacular long-range shot. However, after a VAR review, the goal was disallowed for a foul committed during the build-up on Joao Cancelo.
In the 38th minute, Portugal struck again. Bruno Fernandes assisted Ronaldo, who scored his second personal goal and third for the Portuguese national team.
This was CR7's 10th goal in World Cup history, while his total career tally has reached 975 goals.
Portugal sealed the victory in the 59th minute, when a low cross from Bruno Fernandes deflected off the post and into the Uzbekistan net for a 4-0 win.
In the 87th minute, new substitute Rafa Leao scored the fifth goal. Portugal won 5-0 and took the lead in Group K. The next match in this group between Colombia and Congo will be played tomorrow in the early hours of the morning.
In the final matches, Portugal will face Colombia, while Uzbekistan will play the Democratic Republic of Congo.
