The American president commented in ironic tones on Keir Starmer's departure from the leadership of the Labour Party, criticizing him for his stance on the conflict with Iran and his domestic policies...
United States President Donald Trump has repeated his criticism of outgoing British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, saying that British citizens did not approve of his stance on war with Iran. Speaking at the White House, Trump added sarcastically that Starmer “wasn’t Winston Churchill.”
The comments came after Starmer resigned from the leadership of the Labour Party after he admitted he had lost the trust of a significant section of his parliamentary group.
Trump also said Starmer had "done himself a great deal of harm" through his policies on immigration and energy. However, he described the British prime minister as "a very good man" and "a friend of mine in a way."
Relations between the two leaders deteriorated sharply after the outbreak of the conflict with Iran. The British government initially refused to allow the United States to use British military bases for bombing operations against Iran, although it later granted limited authorization for defensive missions.
Diplomatic clashes deepened during the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz, as Washington publicly criticized the stance of the United Kingdom and several other allies.
At the same time, the White House rejected proposals put forward by the United Kingdom and France to create a multinational mission to protect maritime navigation after the end of the fighting.
The conflict has brought NATO disputes back into the spotlight. Trump has argued that the United States continues to bear a disproportionate burden for Europe's defense. U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth recently announced a review of the U.S. military presence in Europe, accusing several alliance members of having yet to submit credible plans for meeting defense spending targets.
"They weren't there when we needed them"
During a statement in the Oval Office, Trump said: "I wanted to see if they would really come and help us. We asked for their support and they were not there for us."
He added that the lack of support from London was not well received by the British public. "Starmer wasn't there and, you know what? The British people didn't take it well," he said.
According to Trump, the British prime minister had implied that the United Kingdom would only support the United States after the war had been won. “We didn’t need help because we would have won the war,” Trump said, before adding wryly: “We weren’t dealing with Winston Churchill.”
