Cable from DASH also to Tirana, US seeks information on extreme left groups in Albania
The US State Department has sent a diplomatic cable to more than 20 US embassies around the world, including the US Embassy in Tirana, asking them to gather information on far-left groups operating in the countries where they are accredited. The news was reported by the Washington Post , which cited internal documents and officials familiar with the initiative.
According to the American newspaper, the cable was sent to embassies from Argentina and Mexico to Italy and Albania, as part of an effort by the Trump administration to gather information on what it calls a "resurgence of transnational far-left terrorism."
The report notes that the administration aims to expand international cooperation on this issue. In this context, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has invited representatives from more than 60 countries to a ministerial meeting in Washington on July 16, where coordination against political violence and far-left groups is expected to be discussed.
However, according to the Washington Post, the initiative has been met with skepticism by a number of US allies. The newspaper quotes European diplomats who say that in their countries the far left is not considered a priority threat to national security, while some of them have stated that they see no reason to participate in the meeting called by Washington.
The article also recalls that the Trump administration, in late 2025, declared four European far-left organizations – one in Germany, one in Italy and two in Greece – as foreign terrorist organizations, a decision that has sparked debate among counterterrorism experts and European partners.
According to the Washington Post, this initiative reflects the Trump administration's shift in security priorities, placing the far left at the center of its counterterrorism strategy, an approach that continues to cause skepticism both within the US administration and among its allies. / Pamphlet
