How the conflict that shook relations between Rome and Washington erupted
The clash between US President Donald Trump and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is taking on new dimensions.
On Tuesday morning, Italian television network La7 released the full audio recording of the phone call in which Donald Trump attacked Giorgia Meloni last week.
This was the first attack the US president launched against the Italian prime minister immediately after his return to Washington from the G7 summit, on the evening of June 18.
David Parenzo's show "L'Aria che Tira" managed to publish the entire recording of the phone call between journalist Daniele Compatangelo and the US president a week later, after the White House approved its publication yesterday. From the recording it becomes clear that it was Trump himself who directed the conversation towards Giorgia Meloni.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni accused her one-time close ally Donald Trump of fabricating a story about her, after the US president told an Italian TV channel that she had 'begged' him to take a photo with her at the G7 summit https://t.co/lMm0HYeIZi pic.twitter.com/PCAtaSRv8j

What does the original recording reveal?
Immediately after connecting with Donald Trump, Compatangelo briefly introduced himself and then tried to ask the American president about his real intentions regarding the prospect of negotiations between Russia and Ukraine.
Trump did not answer the question and immediately asked about Giorgia Meloni.
"How is your Prime Minister?" he said.
Compatangelo replied: “Well, you just met him at the G7 Summit.”
“Of course,” Trump replied. “Is she happy? Well, of course she’ll be happy that she talked to me. I didn’t have to.”
Trump continued: “She wanted a picture with me so much. She begged me for a picture.”
Compatangelo laughed and then asked Trump what his serious message was for European leaders.

"They've done a terrible job on energy and migration. It's a disaster. If they don't solve these two problems, Europe will never be the same again," Trump repeated, as he ended the conversation by saying: "I have to leave now, goodbye."
