The stigma that Rama has put on Albania: why does the world see us as a

Albania amid accusations of state capture and drug economy...

For some time now, a strong, unpleasant and politically dangerous term for the country's image has been circulating on the international scene: "narco-state". A label that comes not from peripheral analysts or blogs, but from a long list of major European and American media outlets, media that shape global public opinion, influence diplomacy and EU security policies.

While Prime Minister Edi Rama, in his interview with "Euronews", emphasized that "there is crime in Albania like everywhere in Europe", the picture presented by international media is much more alarming: not crime "like everywhere", but a crime linked to state structures, with a parallel economy worth billions and with real influence in politics. It is precisely this picture that "Der Spiegel", "ARTE", "Follow the Money", "Domani", "The Independent", "Washington Examiner" and others have been talking about for a long time.

1. "Der Spiegel": Albania as Edi Rama's private narco-state

The German magazine describes Albania as a country where political power and criminal groups operate in parallel and, in some cases, together. The report highlights institutional mechanisms that, according to them, fail to curb the drug economy, but only manage it at the political level.

2. "The Independent": Albania, the center of trafficking in the Adriatic

British media have published several articles positioning the country as a major transit point for cannabis and then cocaine entering the EU. According to their description, Albania has built “a complete industry” with branches in the Netherlands, Belgium and Italy.

3. "ARTE" - The documentary that raised alarm in the EU

The investigative program "ARTE Europe Weekly" treats Albania as a "problematic partner" of the EU, where organized crime has spread into structures of administration, police and local politics. Some segments of the documentary are harsh: they present Albania as a country where justice reform has been captured by the interests it was supposed to fight.

4. "Follow The Money" (FTM): Albanian Mafia Challenges Europe

The FTM investigation, also published on the "BLAST" platform, explains in detail the expansion of Albanian groups in the cocaine market in the West, emphasizing that "the networks operate with political protection in the country of origin." For the EU, this type of presentation is more worrying than any political statement.

5. "Domani": State capture and the mafia's ties to power

The Italian newspaper has published several analyses on the links between Albanian politics and criminal groups operating in Italy. The articles talk about a dual economy: a formal economy and a criminal economy that, according to them, is worth billions.

6. "Washington Examiner": The European Drug Kingdom

This American article describes Albania as "a laboratory of transnational crime," warning that trafficking, corruption, and institutional capture are putting the country on the radar of Western security agencies.

Why is Albania perceived this way?

One of the main reasons why Albania is labeled a "narco-state" is the way in which the profits of organized crime are allegedly recycled into the legal economy, particularly in construction.

Most international reports highlight the same problem: a construction boom that is not explained by real market dynamics; villas, towers, resorts and real estate being purchased with undeclared money; lack of effective verification of the source of funds; low financial investigation capacity.

"Follow the Money" (FTM) and their investigative partners argue that Albania has become one of the main gateways for the recycling of illicit capital in Europe, linking this to criminal clans operating in drug trafficking.

Another strong reason why the media uses the term "narco-state" has to do with the perception of mutual connections between criminal structures and segments of politics.

In reports by "Der Spiegel", "Domani" and "ARTE", it is emphasized that: some criminal groups have had access to local officials or public businesses; local politicians or public officials have been investigated or sometimes arrested for collaborations with trafficking networks; local government in some areas is seen as "captured" by criminal interests .

Although not every report is the same, the main line is this: the state is not radically disengaged from criminal activities, and this adds weight to the term “narco-state”.

When the prime minister says that "crime is like everywhere," he places the debate on a comparative level. But the problem Europe raises is not with "crime," but with its scale, impact, and penetration into the economy, institutions, and politics.

This is where the term "narco-state" comes from: not because of the trafficking, but because of the way it is said to have influenced power.

While the government tries to project the image of a normal, modern, and EU candidate state, international media, from Germany to Italy, from Britain to the US, present the country as a key hub of organized crime on the continent.

The truth may be somewhere in between. But the fact that the term “narco-state” is being used with this intensity is an alarm signal that can no longer be ignored. /Prepared by 'Pamphlet'

Nuk dua t'i dal krah larove tane. Ketu ne Britani eshte nisur nje hekurudhe qe lidh Londren me Manchester e ka me se 10-15vite. U planifikua per 50,000 Pound, jane hedhur 100,000 Pound e akoma duhen Pound te tjera kur jane nderruar 2-4 qeveri deri tani. Wembley Stadium kur u rindertua u tha qe do kushtoje 700,000 Pound e mbaroi per 950,000 Pound. Ashtu edhe Millenium Dome nje fare rrumbullake me cati-tende plastike e lista nuk mbaron. Keto shifra jane permendur nga media e ne menyre fisnike te edukuar. Pse? Sepse dalin te papritura te paparashikuara. Kur nishim te vegjel shkonim e laheshim ne lumenj e rezervuare e degjohej "muzika" e bretkocave qe te cante bythen, e megjithate ishte nje "muzike" qe te terhiqte. Pse? Sepse Shqiptaret jane rritur me "muziken" e grave te dyqani i fshatit si 75% fshatarake, maloke, provinciale e quani si te doni. Doli nje fjale e deformuar atehere qe fshatarit i thonim pshatar me percmim sepse e ka mendjen e gjykimin te ngushte.
