Mexican authorities have confirmed the discovery of the remains of journalist Roxana Guzmán, a month after she was kidnapped from her home in a shocking incident. The moment of the armed break-in was captured on camera and the footage was widely shared online.

According to the Veracruz State Attorney General's Office, eight people have been arrested on suspicion of involvement in the journalist's kidnapping and murder. Among them are four officers from the municipal police of Ixhuatlán del Sureste, accused of providing logistical support, supplies and resources to a criminal organization.

The kidnapping took place on June 2 in the southern Mexican city of Nanchital. According to footage recorded inside the apartment, armed men with their faces covered broke the glass door with a sledgehammer and forced their way into the house. In the video, a man, identified as the journalist's brother, can be heard shouting: "There's a child, there's a baby, calm down!"

After entering the apartment, the perpetrators pointed their weapons at the people inside and ordered them to lie on the floor. Moments later, one of them picked up the phone that was recording the incident and the video was cut off.

The prosecutor's office did not disclose the exact location where the remains were found. However, local media reported that they were discovered on a farm in the southern state of Veracruz and later identified as Roxana Guzmán. According to authorities, three of those arrested are suspected of directly participating in her kidnapping.

Roxana Guzmán was the director of the local media outlet Pulso Informativo del Sureste, which reported on local current affairs, including missing persons cases, road accidents, as well as social and sporting events.

After her death was confirmed, colleagues described her in a social media reaction as a journalist "at the service of the truth." According to local media, she had left Veracruz in 2017, following the murder of her husband.

The organization Article 19, which defends press freedom, points out that since 2000, 34 journalists have been killed in the state of Veracruz alone. Roxana Guzmán is the third journalist to lose her life in Mexico since the beginning of this year.

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights has repeatedly stated that violence against journalists undermines freedom of expression and reinforces the climate of fear and self-censorship in the country.
