In a speech delivered Friday evening at Mount Rushmore, the US president claimed that a resurgent "communist threat" poses a serious danger to the country.
Donald Trump has opened the weekend of celebrations for America's 250th anniversary with an extraordinary political attack on what he called the "communist threat" in the US, portraying his supporters as "enemies of July 4, 1776."
The US president spoke for about half an hour Friday evening at Mount Rushmore, South Dakota, the latest stop on his tour to mark the historic anniversary of the United States' Declaration of Independence from Britain.
Greeted with chants of "USA! USA!" and briefly interrupted by a flyover of F-16 fighter jets, Trump praised the four presidents whose faces are carved into the granite mountain: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln.
"They were men of action, men of ambition, men of courage, men of destiny and men of truly great intelligence ," said Trump, who has never ruled out the idea of his face being added to Mount Rushmore. " Above all, they were the great men of history ," added the US President.
The president argued that American exceptionalism stems not only from the Constitution but also from the country's unique culture and identity. He denounced recent efforts to "snuff out our American spirit" and "take us away from our history," vowing to a largely white crowd: "We will give our country back its identity. "
Trump then abandoned any attempt to deliver a traditional presidential address, which aims to rise above political divisions, unite parties and address citizens of all persuasions.
Instead, four months before the November midterm elections for the US Congress, he returned to a theme that has been recurring lately: portraying progressive Democrats as communists who pose an existential threat to America. Trump spoke just hours after Zohran Mamdani, the mayor of New York and a democratic socialist, gave a speech in support of immigrants that was widely seen as a counterattack to Trump and his "Make America Great Again" movement.
