Protests against Prime Minister Edi Rama have escalated after more than a month of daily mobilization. According to the French newspaper Le Monde , the demonstrations, which began as peaceful rallies, have entered a more confrontational phase, culminating in clashes near Parliament and the arrest of 19 protesters on July 2.
For weeks, thousands of citizens have gathered every evening in front of the Prime Minister's Office in Tirana to demand a halt to developments that they say are endangering Albania's coastline and protected natural areas. The movement has dubbed itself the "Pink Flamingo Revolution," a name that refers to the flamingos and other bird species that live in the Narta lagoon and that activists say are endangered by construction projects.
On July 1 and 2, hundreds of protesters tried to disrupt parliamentary sessions by throwing eggs at deputies. Police responded with tear gas and water cannons to disperse the crowd, arresting 19 people. According to Le Monde, this is the highest number of arrests since the protests began.
Organizers argue that the decision to intensify the protests came after the government refused to engage in dialogue with them. They oppose what they call the uncontrolled and non-transparent concreting of the Albanian coast and accuse the authorities of favoring large private investments to the detriment of the public interest.
One of the most prominent figures of the protest, feminist and anti-corruption activist Sidorela Vatnikaj, declares that the movement no longer believes that dialogue with the government can yield results. According to her, the resignation of the prime minister has become the main demand, while the protesters are demanding the creation of a caretaker government and the holding of early elections.
Vatnikaj accuses the government of authoritarianism and claims that Edi Rama has remained in power thanks to the support of organized crime. These are accusations made by the activist and reported by Le Monde.
The article recalls that Edi Rama has led the Albanian government since 2013 and that during this period he has promoted a development model based on large construction investments and urban transformation.

Sipas Le Monde, investimi vlerësohet të ketë një vlerë ndërmjet 2 dhe 4 miliardë eurove, megjithëse shifra ndryshon sipas burimeve.
Sipas artikullit, protesta nisi në fund të muajit maj në Zvërnec, pasi banorët panë makineri ndërtimi në plazh dhe dolën për të kundërshtuar punimet. Demonstruesit pretendojnë se u përballën me ndërhyrje të ashpër nga roje private sigurie. Le Monde shkruan se, përtej përfshirjes së familjes Trump, shumë protestues e shohin këtë rast si shembull të mënyrës se si prona publike dhe pasuritë natyrore kalojnë në duart e investitorëve të fuqishëm, të cilët, sipas tyre, gëzojnë mbështetjen e autoriteteve shtetërore.
Kryeministri Edi Rama ka mohuar që projekti të ketë hyrë në fazën e zbatimit. Ai ka deklaruar se nuk ekziston ende një projekt përfundimtar dhe se studimet e ndikimit në mjedis nuk janë realizuar. Megjithatë, aktivistët mjedisorë nuk e konsiderojnë bindës këtë argument, duke theksuar se Parlamenti ka miratuar tashmë ndryshime ligjore që lehtësojnë ndryshimin e statusit të zonave të mbrojtura ku parashikohen investimet.

Që nga fundi i majit, Edi Rama ka alternuar deklarata pajtuese me tone kërcënuese. Në një intervistë për “Le Monde”, kryeministri, i cili kërkon të ruajë imazhin e një lideri pro-evropian, deklaroi se është “i gatshëm të dëgjojë shqetësimet e qytetarëve të tij”, por pretendoi se është viktimë e një “mobilizimi politik” dhe e “fushatave të dezinformimit”.
Pas përplasjeve të 2 korrikut, ai përdori sërish një ton të ashpër në rrjetet sociale, duke deklaruar se “dhuna fizike është tashmë e vetmja gjë për të cilën janë të aftë këta dështakë mendjengushtë, të manipuluar nga duar të huaja”, ndërsa akuzoi përsëri protestuesit, pa paraqitur prova, se po manipuloheshin nga Rusia ose Irani.
The article also brings the position of former Foreign Minister Besnik Mustafaj, who considers the Prime Minister's behavior an expression of an authoritarian tendency. According to him, Rama fully controls the Socialist Party and continues to be supported by the parliamentary majority.
“ Edi Rama lives in a very disturbing autocratic delirium; he thinks he is irreplaceable ,” declares former Foreign Minister Besnik Mustafaj, co-founder of the Democratic Party of Albania, the main opposition force.
However, this party, led by former Prime Minister Sali Berisha, who has been indicted for corruption since 2023, is seen as discredited as the current government by protesters, who chant in the streets: "Rama in prison, Berisha in prison!"
In a deeply politically divided country, the emergence of a civil society that claims to represent European values is considered the main achievement of this movement.
Political analyst Agon Maliqi estimates that the protest has created a new atmosphere in Albanian public life, highlighting a part of civil society that identifies with European values and that demands more transparency, accountability, and protection of the public interest.
While mobilization appears to have reached its peak, Edi Rama continues to rely on his overwhelming parliamentary majority and a Socialist Party that stands united behind him, with the exception of a single female MP.
"Rama controls his party with an iron fist," recalls Besnik Mustafaj, also underlining "the sometimes anarchic and chaotic character of the demands of the pink flamingo movement, which ranges from Marxists to nationalists."
However, according to him, it still remains unclear whether this civic energy will be transformed into a political alternative.
Activists consider this diversity both a strength and a weakness, as it gives the movement a civic character, but makes it more difficult to formulate a common political platform.
"Our movement is very heterogeneous. This is both our greatest strength and our greatest weakness in a revolutionary context," says Sidorela Vatnikaj, one of the activists. /Adapted from Pamphlet /
