The leader of the Democratic Party says that the report adopted by the European People's Party also supports the youth civic protest and raises concerns about the electoral process in Albania.
The Chairman of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, stated that the European People's Party (EPP) has unanimously approved the report of the fact-finding mission for Albania, emphasizing that the document calls for the creation of a technical or caretaker government to organize free and fair elections.
According to Berisha, the report was approved by the EPP Political Assembly and contains critical assessments of the political and institutional situation in Albania. He said that the document describes the country as a state gripped by organized crime, oligarchs and drug cartels, while claiming that it highlights problems related to the electoral process, the use of state resources in elections and the relations between institutions and the ruling party.
Berisha stated that the report also refers to the assessments of international organizations, including the OSCE/ODIHR and the V-Dem institute, claiming that the document highlights the lack of conditions for a fair electoral competition.
In his statement, the DP leader said that the report also addresses issues related to the fight against corruption, the functioning of institutions, respect for the decisions of the Constitutional Court and the rights of the opposition in Parliament. He mentioned several government officials by name, linking them to the criticisms that, according to him, the report contains.
According to Berisha, one of the main elements of the EPP resolution is support for the creation of a technical or caretaker government, with the argument that this would guarantee the holding of free and fair elections.
In the same statement, Berisha also touched on the youth civic protest, claiming that the EPP resolution expressed support for this movement due to, according to him, its just cause. He said that the protest has entered its 35th day and described it as an example of peaceful protest, claiming that it has received broad political support.
"I think this is a great achievement first and foremost for those boys and girls, men and women who have been protesting for 35 days for a great national cause for hours and hours and have become an example throughout the world for their peaceful protest. So we can say that today's protest may be perhaps the only protest in the last 30 years in Albania and Europe, which has received the full support of the entire political spectrum," he said.
