Cape Verde was one of the biggest and most beautiful surprises of the 2026 World Cup. The representative of the country with around 500 thousand inhabitants surprised the football world with its dignified performances, showing character and personality against some of the strongest national teams on the planet.
This was confirmed in the round of 16 match against the reigning world champions, Lionel Messi's Argentina. The Cape Verdeans made things difficult for the "Albiceleste", and were even very close to a historic elimination of the Argentines, in what would be the biggest surprise of this World Cup.
In the end, Argentina triumphed 3-2, but the African team won something equally important: the respect and admiration of fans around the world, thanks to the football it displayed throughout the tournament.
Emotions reached their peak after the match. Amidst tears and pride, the Cape Verdean players received a standing ovation from the Argentine fans, who greeted them with respect for their performance and the spectacle they gave on the field.
