OceanGate Titan tragedy, report: Submarine had damage from previous dives

US authorities have discovered that the OceanGate Titan submarine had been damaged during previous dives and was built through a poor engineering process that did not meet safety standards.

The submarine disappeared in June 2023 in the North Atlantic and took the lives of five people on board, including OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush.

The US National Transportation Safety Board, NTSB, found that the ship's mechanical design was "deficient", which led to its inability to meet stability requirements.

The report says the company had not carried out the necessary testing checks, as a result of which it was unaware of the true limits of the submarine's endurance. The submarine disappeared in the North Atlantic while trying to approach the wreck of the Titanic.

In August, the US Coast Guard had published its investigation, describing the accident as entirely preventable and sharply criticizing OceanGate's safety practices.

Stockton Rush himself piloted the Titan on its final dive. Along with him were French deep-sea explorer Paul-Henri Narzolet, businessman Sazanda Daoud, his 19-year-old son Suleman Daoud, and British billionaire Hamish Harding, all of whom had paid up to $250,000 to join the expedition.
