Footage has emerged of the panic-stricken aftermath of a powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck off the western coast of Mexico. Videos shared by local media and on social media show residents rushing out of buildings, while a government building in Guatemala was evacuated due to the strong shaking.
The earthquake was recorded off the coast of the Mexican state of Chiapas, with its epicenter at sea, about 71 kilometers southwest of Puerto Madero, at a depth of about 10 kilometers, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).
The tremors were felt strongly not only in Mexico, but also in Guatemala and El Salvador, where residents reported moments of panic. Witnesses told Reuters that buildings shook violently, forcing many people to take to the streets for safety.
Meanwhile, the US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) announced that there is a risk of tsunami waves in coastal areas up to 300 kilometers from the epicenter of the earthquake, while authorities continue to monitor the situation.
There are no official reports of casualties or major material damage so far, while emergency teams are carrying out verifications in the affected areas. The published images clearly show the force of the tremors and the immediate reaction of citizens, who abandoned buildings as soon as the earthquake was felt.
