Serwer: Preventing civil war was one of the best things I did in Kosovo
American professor Daniel Serwer

American professor Daniel Serwer has said that one of the most important achievements of his engagement in Kosovo was the effort to prevent a civil war in the post-war period by promoting dialogue between representatives of the KLA, LDK, and civil society.

In a conversation on the PIKË podcast with publicist Veton Surroi, Serwer recalled the meetings he organized with representatives of various spheres of political and social life in Kosovo, with the aim of getting them to cooperate with each other and understand that the post-war period required politics and dialogue, not weapons.

He revealed that former President Hashim Thaçi had told him years ago that the meeting in Lansdowne, in the US state of Virginia, was the moment when he and other KLA members realized that the war was over and that they should move into politics. Serwer described as extraordinary the fact that the KLA gave up its weapons and became involved in the political process, emphasizing that such cases have been rare in other conflicts.

"But getting the people from the NGOs, the KLA and the LDK to talk to each other was one of the best things I ever did. At that time, there was a civil war brewing in Kosovo... The reason we had the meeting in Lansdowne was to prevent civil war. And I think we succeeded," Serwer said.
