Serbia's Minister of State Administration and Local Self-Government, Snezhana Paunovic, has apologized to President Aleksandar Vučić and Prime Minister Đuro Macu, after her statement regarding the "ethnic cleansing of Kosovo" caused reactions inside and outside Serbia.
Paunovic stated that her words were taken out of context and that only a seven-second fragment of the interview was released to the public.
However, in the interview broadcast by the media where she was invited, the minister is heard saying that, "if she had been in Slobodan Milosevic's place in 1998, she would have ethnically cleansed Kosovo."
Clarifying the statement, Paunovic said he had expressed a personal stance and not official policy.
"This was my story, not a political statement. It's uncomfortable for me to have to explain that this is not the president's or the government's policy," she said.
The Serbian minister added that with her statement she had meant the removal of people who, according to her, "did not feel part of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia", while those who would choose "terrorist acts" would be treated as terrorists.
Paunovic also reacted to the decision of the Kosovo authorities to declare her persona non grata. She called this decision paradoxical and said that the permanent ban on her entry into Kosovo was imposed by what she called “the temporary institutions of Kosovo.”
