Despite the escalation of military attacks over the weekend, the United States and Iran have signaled that diplomacy still remains an option for resolving the crisis.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Washington remains open to negotiations with Tehran, even though the US military has entered the ninth night of military operations against Iran.
"We will continue to strive for a long-term peace. The Trump administration remains open to a diplomatic solution," Rubio told reporters. He added that the US has received signals, both directly and through intermediary countries, that the Iranian side is interested in talks.
Similar messages came from Tehran. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said that Iran "remains open to diplomacy" and that international mediators are continuing efforts to facilitate dialogue.
However, he stressed that Iran's defensive military operations will continue as long as attacks on the country do not stop.
The statements come at a time when tensions between the two countries have reached a high level. US President Donald Trump said that Iran has been hit "very hard" in the latest wave of attacks, while Iranian forces have launched drone and missile attacks on targets in Gulf Arab countries, allies of the United States.
Despite the armed conflict, recent statements from both sides suggest that diplomatic channels have not been completely closed.
