A senior Iranian source told Reuters news agency that mediators have proposed a 10-day pause in attacks between Iran and the United States, with the aim of finding a way to revive the temporary ceasefire agreement.
According to the source, the proposal aims to create a space for new negotiations, after the situation deteriorated in recent weeks. It comes at a time when the conflict between the two countries appears to have entered a new phase of tension, despite previous diplomatic efforts.
As a reminder, on June 17 of this year, the US and Iran signed a Memorandum of Understanding that formalized a temporary ceasefire and set a 60-day deadline for negotiations on a permanent agreement. However, the ceasefire began to unravel in the first week of July, largely due to incidents in the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic area for global oil transportation.
US President Donald Trump officially declared the ceasefire “complete” on July 9, stressing that the US would not tolerate further violations. This morning, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei confirmed that “mediators” had exchanged messages with Tehran in recent days. He stressed that Iran is open to dialogue, but insists that any proposal must respect the country’s sovereignty and interests.
The proposal for a 10-day truce could serve as a "bridge" to avoid further escalation, especially if mediators like Qatar, Pakistan or Oman manage to bring the parties to the table.
However, key issues, such as the Iranian nuclear program, security in Hormuz, and sanctions, remain unresolved and complicated.
