Leandro Paredes has spoken openly for the first time about Argentina's World Cup final defeat to Spain, dismissing all the conspiracy theories that circulated after the match.
In an interview with "ESPN", quoted by "Goal.com", the Argentine midfielder admitted that Spain was the best team in the final and fully deserved the world title, while emphasizing that the Argentine national team does not pay attention to the speculation that spread on social networks.
" If I heard everything that was said, I would go crazy. What was not said before, during and after the World Cup... We had a great World Cup ," said Paredes.
The Boca Juniors footballer also honestly analyzed the lost final, acknowledging the opponent's superiority.
" Spain were superior to us in the final, they are deserved winners. What remains for us is to appreciate what we achieved during these eight years. It was a spectacular cycle, a great pleasure to be part of it and I am convinced that as time goes by we will understand even better the value of this period ."
The World Cup final was won by Spain 1-0, giving "La Roja" their second title in history. However, the match was not without tension.
Shortly after the final whistle, Paredes was involved in a scuffle with Spanish players. According to reports, he grabbed Erik Garcia by the throat, while Gavi, who intervened to protect his teammate, ended up on the ground during the incident.
Initially, there was talk of a red card for the Argentine midfielder, but the official FIFA report only punished him with a yellow card. Paredes has not publicly expressed remorse for the episode, and has since returned to play for Boca Juniors.
He also revealed that he had played the final stage of the World Cup with a slight fracture in his rib.
" The first few days were difficult because of the fracture, but now I feel much better ," he said.
After the final, numerous conspiracy theories spread online, but Paredes considers them to be just media hype. For him, the only truth is that Spain was the better team in the grand final, while Argentina should be proud of the extraordinary eight-year cycle they built, despite the disappointment of losing in the decisive match.
