The Gordie Howe International Bridge, a $4.5 billion project connecting the US state of Michigan with the Canadian province of Ontario, opened to traffic on Monday, months after US President Donald Trump threatened to block its opening.
The 2.4-kilometer-long bridge, connecting the cities of Detroit and Windsor, is considered one of the most important infrastructure projects of recent decades for trade between the United States and Canada.
Canada financed the construction of the bridge and, under an agreement reached in 2012, will share revenue from tolls with the state of Michigan once it recoups its investment.
In February, Donald Trump declared that he would not allow the bridge to open, arguing that the United States was being treated unfairly in the project.
However, this month, Canada and the United States reached a last-minute additional agreement, which paved the way for the inauguration and start of traffic on the bridge.
However, due to rising tensions between the two countries over new tariffs threatened by Trump, Canada canceled the joint inauguration ceremony. A Canadian government spokesman said the moment would be celebrated "only among Canadians."
In a social media post on Friday, Trump responded by saying it was "okay" that Canada had "uninvited" the United States from the opening ceremony, adding that Canada was paying "significant TARIFFS" to its neighbor.
