Christopher Nolan's Odyssey, a masterpiece that surpasses Homer!

Nolan goes beyond the Homeric adventure and brings a film about man, power, leadership and the consequences of war. His Odysseus abandons the throne, while Penelope chooses life in the face of glory and false myths.

Christopher Nolan, who is not without reason considered the master director of the 21st century, made a splash with "The Odyssey" long before the film was released in theaters.

Beyond the marketing game, now normal in the cinematographic industry, the very return to the screen of the drama brought many times by different authors caused a storm of controversy, which has been sweeping the internet for almost a month.

The controversies ranged from conspiracy theories to the discontent of Homeric puritans, who are not absent even among our turbofolk omniologists.

However, beyond the debates that have increased interest worldwide, the three hours of reviving Homer's masterpiece pass unnoticed.

Nolan's "Odyssey" is not simply a modern adaptation of one of the pearls of world literature. The film builds a work that goes beyond the adventures of Ulysses and their shocking description. Nolan talks about man, leadership, war and, above all, civilization.

The work begins in the heavy atmosphere that has gripped Ithaca, where suitors seek to marry Penelope. Briton Anne Hathaway brings it to life through a romantic interpretation, reminiscent of John Galsworthy's "Apple Blossoms."

Nolan's Penelope is not the classic and majestic character we remember from the image created with great merit by Irene Papas.

Hathaway's Penelope is, above all, a woman. Longing and love for her husband are the strongest feelings she conveys to the viewer. She appears as a romantic Penelope, ready to abandon the throne and run away with the man she loves. Then let the gods do what they always know and want: torment the creatures they constantly say they love, while blackening their lives day after day.

One night before his departure for Troy, Penelope begs Odysseus to leave Agamemnon alone with his crazy ambition. An ambition that did not even spare his daughter, Iphigenia, whom Agamemnon sacrificed for his own glory.

Nolan's Penelope goes beyond the great Homer when she begs Odysseus to board the ship that night and sail toward the unfading sun. She comes across not as one of the strong and stern women of antiquity, but as a woman of our own day, who values the days of life more than glory and false myths.

Odysseus knows that over the course of twenty years he has broken Zeus's law several times. He breaks it even when he kills all the suitors. For this reason, he abdicates the throne and sets off with Penelope towards the sun that never sets.

Nolan thus marks the decline of a crude and brutal civilization, ruined by the greed for power and wealth. Odysseus and Penelope leave in the hope of finding a peaceful life, free from guilt, next to the man they love.

A cinematic work that teaches a lesson about life, leadership, war and, above all, about today's civilization, which is at a crossroads./ Pamphlet
