Keir Starmer has officially resigned as Prime Minister after a meeting with King Charles at Buckingham Palace, the Press Association and other sources report.
Starmer met with the monarch to submit his resignation, thus ending his term as leader of the Labour government.
"Sir Keir Starmer MP had a meeting with the King this morning and tendered his resignation as Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury, which His Majesty accepted with pleasure. Mrs Starmer was also received by the King ," Buckingham Palace said in a statement.
Andy Burnham, who was elected as the new leader of the Labour Party a few days ago, will take office as the new Prime Minister. Burnham will thus become the seventh Prime Minister of the United Kingdom in just a decade, promising stability, greater devolution of power and a new focus on the issues that concern citizens.
Starmer's resignation comes after a period of challenges for his government, including performance in local elections and internal pressures within the party.
The meeting at Buckingham Palace is part of the traditional British constitutional procedure, where the monarch accepts the resignation and names a successor. Andy Burnham is expected to deliver his first speech as Prime Minister from Downing Street, where he will outline his priorities for government.
