US continues attacks on Iran, security concerns grow in the Strait of Hormuz

The US launched a new wave of attacks on Iran today, for the ninth consecutive day, while concerns about the safety of maritime transport in the Strait of Hormuz increased after Tehran announced that two tankers had exploded and remained immobile.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) said the new operation aims to weaken Iran's ability to carry out attacks on commercial shipping passing through this strategic maritime corridor. US authorities did not provide further details on the targets hit.

The attacks are part of an escalating standoff between the US and Iran, after a temporary ceasefire reached a month ago collapsed. The conflict over control of the Strait of Hormuz has affected global energy supplies and raised concerns about the impact on the world economy.

The semi-official Iranian news agency Tasnim reported that US missiles hit several Iranian cities in the early hours of Monday. It said explosions were heard in Tabriz, Chabahar, Konarak, Bandar Mahshahr and Bandar Imam Khomeini.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the US will continue military operations as long as Iran continues to attack merchant ships in the Strait of Hormuz.

"The Strait of Hormuz is an international waterway, and they continue to attack ships in that international waterway. As long as Iran insists on controlling an international waterway, we will have to respond to that. The United States always remains open to a diplomatic solution," Rubio said.

Meanwhile, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced that it had carried out an attack on what it said was an "enemy special operations headquarters" in the Al-Tanf area of Syria. The Revolutionary Guard also said it had targeted US aircraft at Aqaba airport in Jordan with ballistic missiles.

Earlier, Iranian state television reported that Iran had carried out drone attacks on US military assets and equipment at Kuwait's Al-Adiri camp and Ali Al Salem air base.
