Germany and France have sent a clear message of unity in the field of defense and security, during the joint meeting of the Defense and Security Council, held on Friday in Cologne.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced that the German armed forces will participate in a nuclear exercise organized by France this year.

" Germany and France are deepening their defense cooperation. We are strengthening Europe's deterrent capability. Starting this year, we will participate in a nuclear exercise with the French armed forces ," Merz declared.

The meeting took place at the Nörvenich air base, near Cologne, where Merz and French President Emmanuel Macron expressed their intention to give new impetus to the Franco-German axis, just a month after the SCAF next-generation fighter jet program was suspended due to industrial disputes between Airbus and Dassault Aviation.

In a joint statement, the two leaders said the Defense and Security Council meeting marked the "first operational step" in strengthening cooperation between the two countries.

After the failure of the SCAF project, Berlin and Paris agreed to work on creating a common standard that guarantees interoperability between all combat air systems, from drones to fighter jets.

President Macron said that France and Germany have learned lessons from the "SCAF failure" and have oriented their joint defense strategy towards "much more focused" projects, which require close cooperation between political leaders and the defense industry.

The meeting was also accompanied by a friendly atmosphere between the two leaders. Merz posted several photos on social media from the meeting with Macron, including one showing the two talking inside a military plane without jackets.

" Thank you for your friendship, Emmanuel Macron ," the German Chancellor wrote in one of his posts.
