From Reggio Emilia to Cape Rodoni, the unusual story of 350 stolen sun loungers
Stolen sun loungers in Regio Emilia, Cape Rodoni

An unusual story has drawn attention in Italy. Around 350 sun loungers, stolen two years ago from the Onde Chiare sports complex in the city of Reggio Emilia, were found a year later on a beach at Cape Rodoni, north of Durrës.

According to Italian media, the sunbeds were stolen at night in June 2024 from the premises of the complex on Via Fenulli. However, a year later, a tourist from Reggio Emilia, who was vacationing in Albania, noticed that sunbeds with the "Onde Chiare" logo still visible were being used at a seaside resort on Cape Rodoni.

After reading about the theft in local media earlier, she sent photos of the sun loungers to the complex's managers, notifying them of the discovery.

Legal proceedings have begun.

The complex's managers, Alberto Costoli and Enrico Cavazzoni, hired lawyer Gianluca Dallari to initiate legal proceedings to recover the equipment, whose value is estimated at over 45 thousand euros.

"We even thought about going to Albania ourselves to get them, but we decided to follow the legal route. Our lawyer also found a lawyer in Albania, who initiated court proceedings. In theory, the sun loungers should have been seized by the Albanian authorities. But another client, who was in Durrës these days, sent us a new video, where it is clearly seen that they continue to be used by beach customers. We are very angry," said Costoli.

Public appeal and message to Edi Rama

Faced with a lack of results, the complex's leaders decided to make the issue public.

They tagged Italian media, the investigative show "Le Iene", as well as Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama on social media.

"I also wanted to tag Edi Rama, because he often speaks about the development of Albanian tourism. But if sunbeds stolen from Italy are used in Albania, this is not at all a good calling card for tourists and the country's reputation. We have been cooperating with Albanian suppliers for years and we have never had any problems. We hope that the prime minister will take an interest in our case, because we no longer know what path to follow ," said Costoli.

The post that went viral

The complex also published a post on social media, which received thousands of views.

"Hello everyone. If anyone goes on vacation to Cape Rodon... say hello to our sun loungers! It sounds like a joke, but unfortunately it's true," the post reads.

The owners explain that for more than a year they have filed reports, hired lawyers in Italy and Albania, performed official translations, and spent a lot of time trying to get their equipment back.

"Today, a video filmed a few days ago shows that the sun loungers are still at the same beach facility. We just want to understand how it is possible that a theft worth 45 thousand euros, where the items have been identified and documented for more than a year, has still not been solved," the reaction states.

The post has been widely shared on social media and has received hundreds of likes and dozens of shares, while the owners hope that media pressure will help resolve the issue.
