Max Bergmann and Maria Snegovaya from the American think tank "Center for Strategic and International Studies" (CSIS), state that Russia continues to pursue its goal: "strategically, the Kremlin remains determined to subdue Ukraine and prevent it from getting closer to the West until it is reintegrated into Russia's sphere of influence."
In their study, the two experts conclude that Russian President Vladimir Putin wants to use the conflict in Ukraine to expand his power far beyond Russia's borders, even if this risks World War III.
Jens Ulrich Eckhard describes in Die Welt what form such a conflict could take: "NATO officers paint concrete scenarios of what happens after an attack, before hundreds of thousands 'evaporate in a millisecond'."
"The ABCs of the Apocalypse": A Historical Sketch of End-of-the-World Scenarios
The Die Welt journalist discusses historian Armin Wagner's work "The ABC of the Apocalypse", in which he compiled literary descriptions of the end of the world. In his historical summary, Wagner also addresses the position of the German government, which he criticizes as "shaky politics", and directs clear accusations against former Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU).
Wagner quotes historian Jan Claas Behrends, who accuses Merkel of becoming "an accomplice to Putin's negative policy towards Ukraine" regarding Nord Stream 2, a stance that could have contributed to a global conflict. Thomas Urban reports in the journal Cicero that Putin sees himself called by a higher power to rebuild the Russian empire.
Many people would not initially perceive a Third World War as such.
Late last year, Newsweek reported that Bruno Kahl, the head of Germany’s Federal Intelligence Service, believed that Russia was preparing for war against the West. NATO military officials foresee two possible outcomes: direct armed conflict or a broad strategy to weaken cohesion among Western allies.
"Most of us probably won't realize that we are at the beginning of a global conflict," writes The Week magazine.
This assessment is shared by many experts, including military ones.

Wintour sees this as a final sign of the "Pax Americana," the "Long Peace," that ensured relative peace and growing prosperity under American leadership for decades after World War II. "The intertwining of conflicts, the new willingness to use unlimited state violence, and the lack of relevance of institutions of rule-based order"; Wintour sees all of these factors diminishing, quietly marking the end of an era in which wars were formally declared through the exchange of diplomatic notes.
The war in Ukraine was also born more out of a mistake or failure of military leaders, who believed they could take Kiev with a swift military assault.
The term "special operation" therefore fits with what could have happened in the Indo-Pacific or between Israel and Iran, with correspondingly devastating consequences.
As is currently the case in Ukraine.
Richard Overy even explains in the British Telegraph why it is already too late to prevent a Third World War: As early as mid-2024, the historian suggested that "invading troops" could be a way for many countries to achieve quick results rather than waiting for protracted political solutions, and thus creating a much bigger problem. In Overy's view, a war would also be conceivable without a single soldier deployed.
Richard Overy also writes in the Telegraph that conflicts could escalate even if the opponents avoid open war: "there is a possibility that the destruction of satellite communications could undermine the military and economic capabilities of the other side." / Adapted from Fr.de /
