White House spokeswoman Caroline Levitt said talks between US special envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian officials would continue as planned, despite high tensions following the downing of an Iranian drone by a US F-35 fighter jet in the Arabian Sea and despite the Iranians saying they want the talks to take place in Oman, not Istanbul.
"Steve Witkoff will be holding talks with the Iranians later this week. Right now, the talks are scheduled to take place ," Levitt told Fox News.
She added that Trump obviously has several options on the table, clarifying that the use of military force is one of them.
US special envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi are expected to lead the two negotiating teams in the upcoming talks between Washington and Tehran.
The presence of ministers from other countries in the region was also planned, however the Iranians are seeking bilateral contacts.
Behind the scenes, Araghchi held phone conversations with his counterparts in Oman and Turkey, as well as with the Prime Minister of Qatar, in an effort to coordinate on developments around the context and venue of the talks.
At the same time, Witkoff was in Israel, where he met with Benjamin Netanyahu. According to Israeli officials, the meeting focused on Iran.
The Chief of General Staff of the Israeli Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir, the head of Mossad, David Barnea, and the director of the military intelligence service, Major General Shlomi Binder, also participated in the discussion.
