Serious incident off the Greek coast, boat with migrants sinks
A serious incident occurred a short while ago near the island of Chios, when a Greek Coast Guard ship collided with a motorboat suspected of carrying migrants.
As reported by local media, at least 14 victims have been reported so far, while many are missing.
According to initial reports, the Coast Guard patrol boat spotted the boat with the migrants and signaled them to turn back. The smugglers moved towards the Coast Guard boat and a collision occurred, as people began to fall into the sea. But there are still many uncertainties, as there are reports that there were also gunshots.
A search and rescue operation is currently underway in the area, involving four Coast Guard vessels, a private boat with private divers, and an Air Force helicopter.
Emergency medical services (EKAB) ambulances have been mobilized for rapid transfer to the Skylitseio Hospital of Chios. So far, two Coast Guard officers and 25 migrants have been transferred to the hospital - including a pregnant woman and several children.
" A search and rescue operation is underway under the coordination of the Hellenic Coastal Search and Rescue Service, in the maritime area near Myrsinidios, Chios, following a collision between a Turkish vessel and foreign passengers on board a PLS vessel ," the coast guard initially announced.
