Iran has demanded changes to the location and format of negotiations with the United States that were already scheduled for Friday.
The development comes after Iranian armed forces on Tuesday afternoon carried out two provocative actions against US ships in the Persian Gulf, harassing a tanker and approaching a Shahed drone with the US aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln.
According to Axios, these claims increase the risk that President Donald Trump will abandon the diplomatic path and turn towards military options, at a time when significant American power is already concentrated in the region.
According to the same sources cited by Axios, Tehran is withdrawing from the agreements that were reached in previous days, as other countries had already been invited to participate in the talks. Iran is demanding that the negotiations be moved from Istanbul to Oman and be held in a purely bilateral format with the United States, without the presence of Arab and Muslim states as observers.
According to people close to the discussions, the Iranian side's goal is to limit the agenda exclusively to the nuclear program, leaving out issues such as Tehran's ballistic missile systems and allied armed organizations in the region, which are of concern to other Middle Eastern states.
White House press secretary Caroline Levitt said she was briefed by the president's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, on the incidents in the Persian Gulf and Tehran's new demands. She said talks with Iran remain planned, stressing that President Trump continues to prioritize diplomacy, although "all options remain on the table."
