Colombian President Gustavo Petro has arrived at the White House in Washington, where he met with United States President Donald Trump, in a diplomatic-political meeting that marks an opportunity to restore dialogue between the two countries after a long period of tensions.
Tuesday's meeting is the first time the two leaders have met face-to-face since Trump returned to office, amid a relationship that has gone through difficult times.
Relations between the US and Colombia deteriorated last year, including Trump's accusations of Petros' drug trafficking activities and the imposition of sanctions, including the revocation of visas for the Colombian president and members of his family.
The invitation for the meeting came after an hour-long phone call between the two leaders, where the drug situation and other bilateral disputes were discussed, which sparked a reduction in tensions and led to the organization of this meeting in Washington.
The focus of the talks is expected to be cooperation in the fight against narcotics and regional security issues, as the two countries seek to revive their traditional strategic relations after recent disputes.
The meeting also comes at a time when regional tensions have increased following US military operations in Venezuela and Petro's criticism of Washington's policies.
