William Stevenson, the former husband of US First Lady Jill Biden, has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of his current wife, Linda Stevenson.
According to New Castle County authorities, the 77-year-old was taken into custody on Monday, while details about the circumstances of the incident have not been released. Linda Stevenson was found unconscious in the living room of their apartment. Police officers who arrived at the scene attempted to provide first aid, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The victim's body has been sent to the Delaware State Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy, which is expected to determine the official cause of death.
William Stevenson is being held at the Howard Young Correctional Center after failing to post $500,000 bail. Authorities said it is not yet clear whether he has appointed a defense attorney.
Stevenson was married to Jill Biden in the early 1970s. The couple married in February 1970, when Jill Biden was 18 and a student at the University of Delaware, and Stevenson was 23. Their marriage lasted five years.
After the separation, Jill Biden met Joe Biden, then a senator from Delaware, in March 1975, while her divorce from William Stevenson was finalized in May of that same year.
William Stevenson is also known as the founder of "The Stone Balloon Club", one of the most popular venues near the University of Delaware, which for decades has hosted famous artists such as Bruce Springsteen and Dave Matthews.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing, and authorities have not yet provided additional information on the motives or circumstances that led to Linda Stevenson's death.
