Marc Kukurej is the only player in the Spanish national team who knows what it's like to win a world final in New York. Just a year ago, the Spanish defender lifted the Club World Cup trophy with Chelsea at the MetLife Stadium, and now he will return to the same facility with an even bigger goal: to be declared world champion with "La Roja".
One of Spain's most prominent players in this tournament, thanks to his consistent performances, Kukure knows well what awaits the team in case of triumph in Sunday's final. In addition to the stadium, the trophy presentation ceremony is also expected to be similar to that of a year ago. According to protocol, the trophy is even expected to be presented by US President Donald Trump again.
The Chelsea defender has revealed an interesting episode from last year's ceremony, when organizers had anticipated that the players would wait for Trump to leave before lifting the trophy.
" They told us that, according to protocol, Donald Trump would hand us the trophy and we couldn't lift it until he left ," Kukurej told Spanish media.
However, the scenario didn't go according to plan. After the ceremony ended, Trump decided to stay on the podium, while FIFA president Gianni Infantino tried to convince him to leave before Chelsea's celebration.
" We were all there waiting for him to leave, but he didn't want to leave. He would look at us and say: 'Raise the trophy, I'll stay here and that's it, '" recalled Kukureja.
In that final, Chelsea completely dominated PSG, winning 3-0 against the European champions, who were considered favorites after their success against Real Madrid in the semi-finals.
Now, a year later, Kukureja returns to MetLife, this time with the Spanish jersey. After triumphing in the Club World Cup, he aims to experience the same feeling again, but with the most important trophy in world football: the World Cup.
