Around the early hours of this morning, the Border Police received a report that a vessel with 11 people on board was in danger, about eight miles from the mouth of the Vjosa River.

Immediately after the alert, Border Police services headed towards the area with two inflatable boats and managed to locate the vehicle, enabling the rescue of all persons on board.

According to preliminary data, the migrants are citizens of five different countries in Africa and Asia. They have been transported to the ground and are located at the premises of the Vlora Local Police Directorate, where the necessary procedures are being carried out.

Their destination has not yet been determined or whether they were attempting to cross to Italy in a small boat. This is expected to be clarified after their questioning and the completion of investigative actions by the competent authorities.

Following the operation, the 11 rescued migrants were brought in by Border Police forces. Immediately upon arrival, they were offered water and food, as, according to their testimonies, they had spent a long time at sea.

According to Border Police officers, their lives were in serious danger. They were traveling in a 2.5-meter-long boat, suitable for only one or two people, while there were 11 people on board.

If the Border Police had not intervened in time, the risk of a tragedy would have been very high, as the sea had started to get rough and navigation conditions were deteriorating rapidly. The migrants will be escorted to the police station, while they have stated that their intention was to go to Italy.
