The cost of a healthy diet globally has risen by 25% over the past five years, crossing the extreme poverty line and making healthy food unaffordable for billions of people around the world, the United Nations has warned.

The Chief Economist of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Máximo Torero Cullen, announced that about 2.69 billion people, or approximately one in three inhabitants of the planet, do not have the economic means to secure a diet that meets basic nutritional needs.

On the eve of the publication of the report "The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World", Torero said that the average cost of a healthy diet has reached $4.28 per person per day, a figure that exceeds the international extreme poverty line, which is $3 per day.

He emphasized that the challenge is not related to providing the necessary calories, as they can be provided at relatively low cost, but to the affordability of foods that have high nutritional value.

According to FAO data, cereals and root crops, which form the basis of the daily diet, provide the majority of calories, but account for only 13% of the cost of a healthy diet. On the other hand, fruits and vegetables provide only 5% of calories, but represent 16% of the expenditure, while animal products account for nearly 30% of the total cost.

Torero emphasized that the global challenge is not producing sufficient quantities of food, but reducing the cost of products with high nutritional value, so that they become more affordable for the population.

Even the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that unhealthy diets remain among the main risk factors for non-communicable diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and cancer.
